Portland cement comprises chiefly lime (60–65 wt.% CaO), silica (21–24 wt.% SiO 2), alumina (3–8 wt.% Al 2 O 3), and ferric oxide (3–8 wt.% Fe 2 O 3), but also contains small quantities of magnesia (0–2 wt.% MgO), sulphur trioxide (1–4 wt. % SO 3) and other oxides introduced as impurities from the raw materials used in its manufacture.
Although the refinements in manufacture have been allencompassing, the basic processes are the same. Portland cement is composed of lime and silica with small quantities of such materials as gypsum, iron oxide and aluminum.
